Week 2

Welcome back to week 2. In week 1 we got some software installed and experimented with git. This week we are going to install some more software, start learning our programming language - BoxLang, and edit some files.

Wrapping up Week 1 and Prepping for Week 2

At the end of last week, your final assignment was to upload changes to /practicegit/Assignment1.txt and answer some deep philosophical questions regarding poultry. I've looked at your submissions, made some comments and checked those comments into git. You need to download those changes and incorporate them into your project.

1
Open Up Source Tree
2
Change To Your Week 1 Branch

On the left side of the screen you will see your two branched main and week1. Make sure you have checked out week1 by double clicking on it.

3
Pull From Github

In the upper bar on SourceTree your will see a button labeled Pull. There may or may not be a number on it to indicate that there have been changes made to the repo. When you click Pull, those changes will be downloaded from Github and merged into your local work in the week 1 branch.

4
Look at the changes

In this case, they are in the file `/practicegit/Assignment1.txt

5
Merge those changes into your Main Branch

When you merge from one branch to another you start with the target branch checked out. Double click on main to check out that branch. Right click on week1 and choose Merge Week1 Into Main. Your changes will be moved into main.

6
Create a Week 2 Branch

To get ready for this week, branch off of main to create week2 and do this week's work in that.

Setting Up BoxLang and CommandBox
  1. CommandBoxA versatile CLI for managing most things including your local dev environment
  2. Command Box: Basic Navigation
  3. Setting Up A Local Server
  4. Configuring Your Server
  5. Packages What and How
A Quick Excel File

This is a relatively easy assignment. Open up a Spreadsheet program like Excel or Google Sheets. Choose 5 books that you have lying around the house and put them into your spreadsheet. Come up with at least 10 columns with headers and populate them with your 5 books.

Create a folder in your repo called Other Materials and save your spreadsheet in there and check it in with your Week 2 commits

Jump Into `Learn BoxLang`

This week's work involves starting to learn the programming Language we are going to be using in this class which is called BoxLang. For Week 2, don't worry about the section called Data but try to get through the rest.

Save everything in your week 2 branch. When you're done. Check it into Github.

Packages are collections of files and folders that are part of a website or program and serve a purpose. We're going to use CommandBox to download the first set of files to get you started in this class.

1
Open CommandBox to Your Class Repo

To get started, navigate to the folder that will contain the work for this class ( your local repo ).

2
Type `install uml-2480`

If you copy and paste from here, pasting into CommandBox, like every CLI, might not be as simple as CTRL-V or COMMAND-V. You will need to right click in the CommandBox window. CommandBox will reach out to a package repository called Forgebox, find the package of software called uml-2480 and copy it to the folder you were in when you ran the command.

3
Look at the files and get started

Type LS again and you will see a folder called learnBoxLang. If you run this command again, the files that are here now will be overwritten so careful if you make edits to them that you don't run it again by accident. Many times packages are installed in a sub folder to avoid that kind of problem but our package is meant to be the root of your class website so it is configured to install at the root level.

The actual content for "Learn Boxlang" is here in the textbook learn-boxlang
