Course Description

Welcome to Web Site Database Implementation. It’s my goal that this is one of the most helpful and important classes you’ll take in your academic career. Ambitious? Perhaps, but, if I didn’t think it was important, I wouldn’t be here.

Nearly everything in tech and online seems to touch a database. Likes, views, posts, logins, user accounts, comments, calendars, inventory, sales and the list goes on and on. In the fields of technology development, there are specialists in many different areas including Graphic Design, Front End, App Development, Server Side Scripting, IOT and more. However, with all of these area, the results are temporary. The user clicks on a button and then what? The temperature sensor sends a signal and then what? What makes all these actions useful beyond the immediate click or action is the ability to save or persist that data so it can be retrieved and read, analyzed or edited later.

The person who can pull all these layers together - front end, server side scripting and persistence - is called a Full Stack Developer and has a valuable place in the tech ecosystem. They have the ability to look at the entire picture and see how the elements work together which makes them valuable in startup companies, as architects or rapidly diagnosing and trouble shooting problems in the system as a whole.

This course will add databases creation and use to your tech skills. By creating a simple bookstore, we'll look at how a user interface ( UI ) interacts with a server side scripting language and stores its data in a database ( MySQL ). Along the way you'll be introduced to many common tools and techniques including:

  • Using development tools such as a Command Line Interface ( CLI )
  • Creating a local development environment include a local web server and scripting engine
  • Working with tools like GIT for version control and to share code with the instructor
  • Package managers to install reusable code from central locations
